is author of Populism and Elitism: Politics in the Age of Equality, called by journalist Fred Barnes the most important political book of 1992.  He has completed his second book, Social Conservatism: The Movement that Polarized American Politics, due out in January 2012 from Encounter Books. Bell is policy director of the American Principles Project and has written for many publications, most recently the Weekly Standard, National Review, and the Wall Street Journal. He was Republican nominee for the United States Senate from New Jersey in 1978 and was elected a Reagan delegate to the GOP national convention in 1980. He was an issues advisor to the Reagan campaigns of 1976 and 1980.
